Abstract: | For my bachelor assignment industrial design I designed a hybrid fire stove, carried out at Vuur en Leem. The bachelor assignment was carried in a period of three months. The stove aims to fill the gap that the current offering of fire stoves creates. By using the rocket mass heater principles the stove has a very clean combustion and contains both a quick heat transfer as well as a slow (accumulating) heat transfer. The analysis consisted of a market analysis, regulations research, target audience analysis, and a design policy. The obtained insights have been translated into a list of requirements, which served as a guideline during the idea phase. In the idea phase a technical prototype has been made, sketches have been made on different levels of fineness, and models have been made out of foam. On the basis of all the different ideas, five concept have been made. One of the concepts will be elaborated to a final design. The market analysis showed that the Dutch market will be a difficult market for the rocket mass heater. By the presence of a wide spread gas network, the average Dutch person is just not used to use a fire stove to heat their homes. Countries like Norway, Sweden, and Finland are more used to do so. That is one of the reasons why the hybrid stove, in the form of a rocket mass heater, will be targeted to the following countries: the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg, France, Austria, Switserland, Italy, Dermark, Norway, Sweden, Poland, and the Czech Republic. I Vuur en Leem wishes to sell the stove in all the different countries, the way of assembling will be a weighty factor in in the final concept. The regulations research showed that the stove should meet high standard. The upcoming European regulations should be taken in consideration while designing and testing the stove. In order to test the performance of the stove in an early stage, to be able to make changes during the assignment, a technical prototype has been made. During the assignment the prototype underwent several iterations to test different parts and/or configurations. The target audience analysis showed that the targeted audience is very broad and existent of several market niches. The majority of the market is not yet ready for an innovative product like the rocket mass heater. With the use of four personas the target audience was made more tangible. The four personas are based on conversations with possible customers. This was the basis of a clear image what the personas may or may not wish to see in the hybrid stove. The design policy was based on looking into Vuur en Leem’s current portfolio and the intended look and feel of the product. By analyzing brands consistent of the intended look and feel it turned out that the functionality, the user, and minimalistic design are important factors. These factors will be taken in account during the idea phase. The approach of making a technical prototype gave the assignment a technical character. This technical character kept going during the detailing phase, in which the use of materials, the way of assembling, and the mates of the rocket mass heater were elaborated. Besides that, there is a strategic recommendation in the area of intellectual property, cince the rocket mass heater is an innovative and new product, it is important to cover your rights and prevent competitors from copying the product. The final design will serve as a starting point for a design that will be ready for production, which will be put on the market as soon as possible. |
