Abstract: | This research tries to optimize the operating room scheduling of the ophthalmology department of UMC Utrecht. Currently the ophthalmology department experiences a high number of cancellations which are mostly caused by the arrival of emergency patients. The aim of this research is to find a scheduling method that accounts for these emergency arrivals and reduces the amount of cancellations. This is done by analyzing the current situation and performance of the department, a literature review to identify possible interventions, and a simulation model to test the effectiveness of these interventions. Three different interventions are evaluated with the simulation model; different OR selection and sequencing rules, adjusting overtime tolerance, and determining the desirable amount of emergency slack. |
