Abstract: | The climate change is one of the biggest challenges on the global agenda. Renewable energy and especially bioenergy is seen as promising option to cope with the global climate change. Simultaneously concerns about negative environmental impacts have increased, connected to the global increase in biofuel production and trade. In 2009, with implementation of the Directive 2009/28/EC, the European Union underlined the necessity to monitor and assess the impacts of biofuel production and created a harmonized legal basis for certification of biofuels. Certification of biofuels via private voluntary certification schemes has become one of the most important tools to move towards sustainability in this sector. Today numerous different private voluntary certification schemes have been developed. This thesis provides a detailed comparative analysis of three different voluntary certification schemes and argues that certification of biofuels, in the current state is a key tool to ensuring sustainability in the biofuel production, which needs to be further improved. |
