Abstract: | This thesis describes the effects of the border on the cross-border landscape of the “Witte Veen” through a five-dimensional model of border effects. The Witte Veen/Witte Venn is the name of a natural area located at the border between Ahaus (D) and Haaksbergen (NL). This region exists of nature, farms, roads and most importantly for this research: a border. Even though the EU has opened its internal borders for over 20 years, physical characteristics of the border are still present in the landscape. Through answering the question “What are the effects of the national border on the cross-border region?” the disjunctures at the border will be explored and explained in terms of effects resulting from the national border. |
