Abstract: | The process at the emergency department is complex. Every patient that arrives at the emergency department comes unexpectedly and follows a unique and changeable trajectory of care events. It is very difficult to analyze and improve such a complex process. One way of understanding and improving the process of the emergency department without actually changing the real life system is simulation. In this research simulation was used to design scenarios with help of theory and practice. From practice we designed scenarios who support the redesign of the process at the emergency department in Amsterdam. Scenarios designed through meetings with working staff are implemented into an excisting simulation model of the emergency department of Amsterdam. At the emergency department in Amsterdam a new working method will be introduced consisting of a triage-nurse. The purpose of this new method is to improve the patient flow and thus increase patient satisfaction through the reduction of length of stay. Simulation can support the introduction of this new method. Simulating a triage nurse who can initiate direct supplementary diagnostics showed really promising results. |
