Abstract: | For many firms there is not only competition for customers, but also for suppliers. Buying firms try to get competitive advantages from their supplier to outperform their competitors. A necessary condition for gaining these advantages from their suppliers is supplier satisfaction. Supplier satisfaction is also necessary for getting a better performance from these suppliers. This research extends previous research by adding new antecedents that improve supplier satisfaction. This research tested the influence of Operational Excellence (OPEX) and Purchasing Excellence (PUREX) on supplier satisfaction. The findings indicate that PUREX has a direct influence on supplier satisfaction and that OPEX has an indirect influence on supplier satisfaction. To get a broader picture of the influence of supplier satisfaction, this paper used mechanisms of the Social Exchange Theory (SET). The mechanisms that were used are competence trust and expert power. By using these mechanisms it is shown that the relationship between OPEX and supplier satisfaction is completely mediated by competence trust. The data of this research is gathered amongst suppliers of Bons en Evers, a Dutch forging brass company and is analysed with PLS path modelling software. Ultimately, this study provides new antecedents for buyers to achieve more satisfied suppliers and give the purchasers knowledge of the influence of trust and power within the relationship. |
