Abstract: | For this bachelor assignment research is done about how to implement serious games in elementary school and which requirements there are for such a game. Besides this the current design of an existing game will be improved with regards to the requirements found and the results of the analyses of the game. The target audience for this game consists of children from group six to eight. The game combines the different themes of the Da Vinci method. The question answered in this report is: “ How should the current design of the game be changed to comply to the requirements that are drafted for a serious game?” There is looked at the most important parts that make a serious game and how to design a serious game. Research is done to get a better understanding of the target audience and currently existing serious games are compared. Which kind of media is used for these games is also considered. Requirements for the graphical design are sought and the wishes of the client are taken into account. The currently existing game is tested with the target audience to find the major flaws of the game. The results of this research were the basis of a program of requirements. Based on these requirements and wishes, three concepts are formed. These three concepts are tested with the target audience to find the advantages and the disadvantages of the concepts and to make a concept choice. The final design is based on the concept choice. “Adventure: reis rond de wereld”, is the name of the final design. It is a board game which the children can construct themselves. The board consists of several puzzle pieces that fit together in different ways. By using more or less pieces, the children can choose the duration of the game. By throwing a dice the children can move their character over the board. If the child comes at a place with a question mark, a question has to be answered. If the player comes at a place with a hand, he has to draw or act out the word that is on the card. The player that reaches the finish first has won the game. The game consists of a basic set and sets for the different themes. The basic set consists of five board pieces and a start and finish piece. There are also five figures included so the game can be played by five players. Empty question and assignment cards are present so the children or the teacher can choose themselves what should be learned by the game. Every theme set consists of two board pieces that contains specific elements that belong to the concerned theme. Every set also contains five figures that have a link to the theme and question and assignment cards that test the knowledge of the players about the theme. Next to these cards also empty cards are in the set so the knowledge tested about the theme can be increased and customized to the wishes of the school. The theme the model is made for is the Maori. Because of the existence of multiple themes these van be combined. By combining the themes children from different groups and with different knowledge can play the game on their own level. The children and teachers can also choose what should be learned from the game when they play. Also the empty cards that are present in every set can be used to adjust the game to the level of the players. Through the implementation of the draw and act cards the children learn how they can clarify and transfer their knowledge to the other children. Next to the lesson material from the different themes the children also learn how to work together and learn to cope with disappointments by playing Adventure: travel around the world. |
