Abstract: | During this assignment a design of a biomimetic suction is created. The design is based upon information regarding natural suction adhesion systems. The information was obtained by analyzing multiple species and determining the overlapping strategies that they use to improve the functioning of their suction cup. Subsequently these strategies are incorporated into a suction cup design that is verified using a theoretical model. This model makes a prediction about the amount of friction and adhesion that is expected to occur underneath the suction cup. To test the prediction a prototype of the proposed design is created and subjected to tensile strength test. The tests show that the created theoretical model is reasonably accurate and confirm that the biomimicry strategies used work as intended. |
