Abstract:For decades risk communication has not succeeded in connecting civilian and government. This study will conduct research on the perception and information seeking behavior relative to the risk of hazardous contents transported by railway and the related psychological determinants. Specifically, the need of less self-reliant citizens for information and the influence of the environment on risk perception and the potential influence of generalized self-efficacy on the relation between risk perception and information seeking behavior. In this study the influence of psychological determinants, as used in the study of Gutteling and De Vries (2016), is examined in relation to information seeking. It was found that the variables education level, trust, response efficacy, self-efficacy, social norm and risk perception were related to information seeking behavior. Further, it was found that generalized self-efficacy was not related to information seeking behavior. Less self-reliant citizens do not have a lesser intention for information seeking behavior as opposed to self-reliant citizens. Nor on the kind of information they would like to receive. These two groups do differ on the channel they would like to receive the information on. Based on gender there was no difference found on risk perception.
