Abstract:This report contains an analysis of tram wheel wear at the RET. Up until now the RET uses a wheel measurement system to perform condition based maintenance on trams. In a previous research a Matlab program was built that processes the raw measurement data and generates a maintenance planning. The data produced by the measurement system however includes much more information about the performance of individual trams and the fleet. This report consists of three main parts. First of all, an analysis of the measurement system is done. An explanation for the most common measurement errors is given and the accuracy is determined. In conclusion the most obvious measurement errors are caused by contamination of the measurement system and wheel geometry. They can easily be filtered if enough data is available. The accuracy specified by the supplier of the measurement system was not reached. Next the data processing in Matlab is analyzed and extended with some extra features. These features include improved pre-processing of data, tracking of measurement errors and wear rates per wheel profile parameter. Finally, the wear patterns are characterized and corresponding maintenance costs are estimated. This way trams with poor performance could be identified and potential savings were calculated. On top of that some possible causes of wear patterns are presented. However, it proved to be very hard to link a certain cause directly to a certain wear pattern, further research is needed for this.
