Abstract: | The basis of this master thesis builds on previous research regarding intermunicipal cooperations in the Netherlands. Due to municipalities cooperating in a near geographical scope, this thesis studies regions instead of the municipalities. These regions were made with help of a network analysis tool, forming network groups based on the cooperational strength of the municipalities, forming 29 regions. Being part of a debate in regional governance, favouring more or less complexity for better costs and effectivity, complexity and cultural factors were used to study their effects together with the effects of structural factors of regions. The results for complexity are diverse as only incongruence (and to some part the net partners) showed to have a significant (negative) effect on costs, favouring more complexity. Culture showed significant results in lower costs and greater effectivity, but it cannot be determined whether good results come from good culture or vice versa. The structural factors of regions showed no major results, but population size of a region seemed to show a negative effect on costs while a single large municipality in a region may give higher regional benefits depending on the situation. |
