Abstract: | Patient-provider interaction is an important aspect of quality care provision. Communication skills training is needed in order to equip healthcare providers with the relevant skills in order to meet the patient’s needs. This literature review focuses on available technological training programs. Studies were included when (1) they described the evaluation of a training aimed at teaching communication skills, (2) the training involved technology, and (3) the training was targeted at (prospective) healthcare providers. Thirteen training programs were identified and examined in terms of various training characteristics and in terms of satisfaction and effectiveness. The process evaluations revealed that participants appreciated the communication skills training programs and especially the value of face-to-face components was stressed. The effectiveness evaluations demonstrated increased communication performance, confidence and knowledge levels. However, a limitation is that the present literature review as well as the reviewed studies are of low quality. It can still be concluded that blended learning approaches were highly valued by the participants and that the combined effects of different training strategies are promising. Future research that builds upon existing evidence is needed in order to examine the best practice to train healthcare providers’ communication skills. |
