Abstract:Research has been done about the needs of an offender to participate in victim-offender mediation. Thereby a subdivision is made between self-oriented, victim-oriented and combined needs (self- and victim-oriented). Also the relation between the strength of the connection with the social environment and the naming of certain needs and the relation between the connection with the social environment and the willingness to participate in victim-offender mediation have been examined. The expectations were examined using the answers to an online questionnaire that consisted of open and closed questions. The respondents had to imagine themselves in the role of a perpetrator and indicate from that position which needs they would have to cooperate in victim-offender mediation. The mentioned needs were subdivided into self-oriented, victim-oriented and combination needs, after which it could be examined whether perpetrators mention more self-oriented or more victim-oriented needs. To check this, there have also been asked questions whether the benefit of the victims or the benefit of the perpetrators was found more important to cooperate in victim-offender mediation.
