Abstract:
This study addresses the effects of security cameras on safety feelings. In the present research we focus on the way safety feelings are affected by how important people think their privacy is, to what extent people trust the police and by the perceived purpose of camera presence. Data was used from an online experiment in combination with data from an online questionnaire of 158 respondents. The results of this study indicate that respondents mostly perceived an environment without camera presence most safe, followed by an environment with a security camera. The environment with a security camera and a police sign was perceived as least safe. In the discussion there will be attention on limitations, possible explanations and recommendations for future research will be given.
