Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between optimism, eustress and mental wellbeing. Specifically, it was determined to what extent eustress indirectly affects the relationship between optimism and mental wellbeing. A questionnaire was set up to measure participants (n =101) scores on the concepts optimism, eustress and mental wellbeing. Preacher & Hayes (2004) indirect effect assessment was conducted to identify if eustress is indirectly effecting the relationship between optimism and mental wellbeing. Distress was found to be significantly related with all concepts, therefore it was added as a control variable. Results indicated that the variables optimism, eustress and mental wellbeing are positively associated. Eustress was found to play a mediating role in the association between optimism and mental wellbeing when controlled for distress. The findings emphasize the importance of optimism and eustress response in the enhancement of mental wellbeing.
