Abstract:INTRODUCTION: The death of a child is a great tragedy for parents and others. GGD Twente uses a protocol in events of child deaths. The goal of the protocol is, amongst others, to support parents in bereavement. The objective is to identify facilitating and impeding factors, and recommendations in professionals’ adherence towards the protocol used after child death. METHODS: Data was collected with focus groups and interviews. Seventeen participants were included in this research. The questions were set up with the Measurement Instrument for Determinants of the Innovation (MIDI) by Fleuren et al. Opinions were linked to the four concepts of MIDI. RESULTS: All four concepts were mentioned in focus groups or interviews, as facilitating factor, impeding factor, or recommendation: Professionals were positive about their own knowledge and abilities. These facilitating factors were mentioned most. Professionals believe the protocol is not complete and clear. They state that it is unknown which actions need to be done in situations that differ from ‘normal’ situations. These led to recommendations; improvement in adherence can already be done by inclusion of role descriptions. CONCLUSION: Future research should focus on re-implementating this protocol, and on performing this research on a larger scale in the Netherlands.
