Abstract:EU needs citizens to be engaged in social and political life not only to ensure that basic democratic values flourish but also to foster social cohesion at a time of increasing social and cultural diversity. It is hereby essential to learn about the civic competence of EU citizens. This thesis investigates levels of civic competence of EU university students and factors that possible factors that explain the outcome of measurement. The results indicate that the heterogeneity of the community is has a significant correlation with one’s civic competence.
