Abstract:Exercise and nutrition are important factors in diabetes type 2. A proper lifestyle can improve blood glucose levels and decrease the chance of complications related to diabetes. Self-management is important in diabetes type 2 patients, as the patients can positively influence their illness by healthy lifestyle choices. Coaching can create awareness among patients, hereby motivating them on the subject of their diabetes and lifestyle choices. Technology is assumed to play an important part in coaching diabetes type 2 patients, though technologies developed in previous research did not lead to long-term success. This research aims to determine the awareness, self-management and motivation of diabetes type 2 patients to change their lifestyle, in order to explore the requirements for a technology to support patients into healthy lifestyle choices. A qualitative research was conducted using questionnaires and interviews with 19 diabetes type 2 patients of the outpatient clinic of Internal Medicine / Nephrology in ZGT Almelo.
