Abstract:In the current study, two research questions are drawn: To what extent do the needs of restoring the moral image and reconciliation with the victim play a role in the offender’s willingness to participate in victim-offender mediation? The need of the offender for reconciliation with the victim is, according to the expectation, mentioned more often for participation in victim-offender mediation than the need to restore the moral image. The second research question is: To what extent does there exist a difference in the needs to restore the moral image and to reconcile with the victim between the offenders who are willing and unwilling to participate in victim-offender mediation? According to the first expectation, the offenders who are willing to participate in mediation mention the need for reconciliation more often and stronger than offenders who are not willing to participate. According to the second expectation, there is no difference between the offenders for the need to restore the moral image. To investigate this, an online questionnaire is spread through social media. Respondents imagined to be offenders in a fictitious case and then respond to open and closed questions about the needs that could lead to participation in victim-offender mediation. Two groups are distinguished; respondents who would be willing to participate in victim-offender mediation, and respondents who would not be willing to participate in victim-offender mediation. Concerning the first research question, in the qualitative data there seems to be a tendency to the need for reconciliation more than the need to restore the moral image, although this has not significantly been shown in further analyses. However this difference has significantly been shown in quantitative data. Concerning the second research question is for the first expectation, in the qualitative and quantitative part of the research, it appears that there is no support for the expectation that the need for reconciliation is significantly more often and more strongly mentioned by offenders who are willing to act in comparison with offenders who are not willing to participate. Meanwhile, for the second expectation, support has been found and there is no difference in the extent to which the need to restore the moral image has been appointed between the offenders who are willing to participate and the offenders who are unwilling to participate in victim-crime mediation
