Abstract:There is consensus among existing practice and research-related asset management literature about the importance of internal strategic alignment for a successful organization. However, until now, scant attention has been paid to an in-depth study about the necessary conditions that should be met by organizations to reach such an alignment. This study filled in this research gap. In fact, it studied the necessary conditions for two types of internal strategic alignment. First of all, it studied the alignment in the management of physical assets. The concept of asset management (AM) is perceived as a useful philosophy that can help organizations to develop this internal alignment. This study also focused on the internal alignment within the change process that is needed for the AM deployment. By reviewing both strategic management and asset management literature, this Thesis identified 18 necessary conditions for the two types of alignment. These findings were used for two case studies: the regional water authorities Vechtstromen and Zuiderzeeland. For both cases, this Thesis compared the theoretical findings about the necessary conditions with the real-life circumstances and identified gaps. This information was later used study how the organizations could develop those necessary conditions that are yet not present.
