Abstract: | The present study examined the cultural and social factors that influence Chinese student’s decision making regarding studying abroad, country selection and university choice. The key factors studied were filial piety, expectation, competitiveness, safety, and knowledge, emphasizing in parents’ involvement. To better extract parents’ involvement in the decision process, the effects of these predictors were studied separately in student perspective and how student perceived in their parents’ perception, resulting in a total of eight factors, including reciprocal filial piety, authoritarian filial piety, expectation, student perceived competitiveness and safety, and student perceived parents’ perception in competitiveness, safety, and knowledge. Gender and One-Child condition were also considered as exploratory factors in this study. Participant included 152 Chinese students who were studying in China or studying overseas. Authoritarian filial piety and student perceived parents’ perception in safety and knowledge were significantly predicting the decision making for studying abroad, choosing a country and a university. No significant correlations were found for the rest five factors, neither for gender or One-Child condition resulted in major differences. Nevertheless, all factors were shown influencing decisions in an expected direction. The present study sheds light on the influence of the unique parents’ knowledge on student decision making regarding overseas education, and the important influence of filial piety from a cultural perspective. |
