An algorithm for scheduling containers on barges

Multimodal Container Service transports containers using barges between five inland terminals and the Port of Rotterdam. Currently, human planners need to manually decide which container gets assigned to which barge. In this research, we search for an algorithm to schedule containers on barges. We build upon the work of former theses, perform a literature review and apply practical knowledge to come up with our self-developed five step algorithm. Parts of this algorithm are tested on a sample of five voyage with actual data.
