Abstract: | This research was performed at the Grolsche Bierbrouwerij Nederland B.V. (Grolsch). At Grolsch, inventories have been increasing systematically, at times beyond the limits of the warehouse. This has resulted in the need for external storage. In 2017, this external storage was used at the harbour in Enschede with costs of approximately 50,000 euros. If nothing is done, these costs are expected to increase to 85,000 euros for 2018. Because transportation to and from the harbour does not add any value, the question has risen if inventory can be reduced to avoid this need. Because research on optimal batchsizes and production frequencies has been done recently, this research has focused primarily on safety stock. The central research problem has therefore been defined as follows: To analyze past and present production planning decisions and to develop a tool that will determine optimal amounts of safety stock while maintaining target service levels. |
