Abstract: | In this research project, we have investigated if the problems for novice programmers to write programs can be resolved by using visual programming techniques. For this research we used the script module of the platform BizzStream. First, we have researched how the visual techniques can be added to BizzStream. This resulted in a prototype where a visual editor based on Google Blockly is added. The visual editor allows users to develop visual scripts which will be transformed into BizzStream scripts. Next we have validated the prototype by manually creating existing BizzStream scripts as visual scripts. Based on manual comparison between the by the visual editor generated scripts and the original scripts, we can conclude that the visual editor has the same functionality as the current eidtor. The prototype has also been used to find out if the visual script editor works more intuitively than the existing textual script editor. End users have tested the prototype and identified the strong and the weak points of the visual editor. The results gained from these user experience show that creating visual scripts costs more time, and is more difficult than creating textual scripts. Overall conclusion according to the users of BizzStream is that the visual editor does not make scripting easier for novice programmers. |
