Abstract: | The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether eustress and distress mediate the relation between gender and depression. The main focus was on the role of eustress, but distress was added to be able to understand the function of eustress in a wider context. An online questionnaire was distributed to answer the research questions. The respondents who completed the questionnaires consisted out of 217 females and 115 males. The relevant variables were used to investigate to what extend there were mutual differences and mutual coherences, thereafter a mediation analysis was executed. The results indicated that women experience less eustress than men and more distress than men. Furthermore eustress marginally significant mediates the relation between gender and depression, whereas distress significantly mediates this relation. This suggests eustress plays a role in the relation between gender and depression. Because little is known about eustress, the first recommendation is to conduct more research to better determine what eustress entails and how to operationalize eustress. A second recommendation is to use a longitudinal research method to investigate causal relationships with eustress and depression. This information is needed before eustress could be used in depression prevention. |
