Abstract:Background: The ‘Kracht voor tien’-method by Van den Driessche (2016) combines PPIs with psychological theories, ancient wisdoms and discoveries from neuroscience. By using the ten behavioral principles, the reader can increase one’s personal power. To find out in which area of personal strength the reader already scores high and where there is potential for improvement, two online questionnaires have been developed. These have not yet been investigated for their psychometric properties. Method: Between April 1, 2016 and April 5, 2018 the first questionnaire was completed by 200 respondents (77.00% women), aged between 15 and 72 years (M = 45.48, SD = 10.95) and the second questionnaire by 126 respondents (71.40% women), aged between 24 and 72 years (M = 47.49, SD = 10.20). As recruitment strategy convenience sampling was used. By means of exploratory factor analyses, it was investigated whether the assumed factor structures are appropriate for the data. Furthermore, item response theory (IRT) analyses were performed to identify and remove malfunctioning items. Subsequently, the internal consistency and the internal construct validity were examined. To investigate the external construct validity, hypotheses based on research by Ryff (1989) were formulated. Results: The assumed factor structure of both questionnaires could not be replicated in the data. On the basis of the IRT analyses, 20 items from the first questionnaire and 11 items from the second questionnaire were removed. The internal consistency of the total questionnaires was good to excellent. The subscales of questionnaire 1 showed a better internal consistency (adequate to good) than the subscales of questionnaire 2 (inadequate to adequate). Furthermore, the internal construct validity was good. The weak to moderate correlations indicate that the subscales are related, but distinguishable. In order to investigate the external construct validity, the predetermined hypotheses were largely rejected. Conclusion: On the one hand, further development is necessary to make the questionnaires a reliable and valid measuring instrument for scientific purposes. It is recommended to investigate the external construct validity with validated questionnaires such as the Character Strengths Rating Form. On the other hand, a distinction must be made between different fields of application. For the ‘Kracht voor tien’-method it is less important that the questionnaires are valid and reliable, because they serve only as an aid for the reader to find out in which area of personal strength the greatest potential for improvement exists. In this way, specific exercises from the book can be chosen, which are appropriate for the reader.
