Abstract:University Medical Center of Utrecht's (UMCU) brain division houses three clinical wards and two Medium Care Units (MCUs). Two of these clinical wards and both MCUs are central in this research. In these wards there is too much variability in bed utilization, and too many patients are being declined due to a fully occupied ward. Besides that, a lot of incident reports are due to communication errors between the professionals of the different wards. To solve these problems, the management has decided to merge both MCUs and clinical wards. This intervention alone would not solve all problems. After a thorough analysis, we have discovered that the management lacks understanding of the (quantitative) relation between the bed occupancy and bed blocking probability. In order to solve the problems mentioned, we thus need to provide information on the optimal bed capacity and its relation with relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The central problem is therefore formulated as: "What is the optimal number of beds for the new wards, taking the relevant KPIs into account?"
