Abstract:Designing and constructing a sustainable village takes knowledge from many disciplines and a coherent organization overhead to push development forward. At Kalu Yala, many activities in various disciplines are occurring each day to discover how we can live a modern lifestyle while doing more good than harm to the land we inhabit. As a member of the Kalu Yala community, more specifically, the engineering team, my main goal was to ensure water and power are available in the town everyday. Next to this, planning for the growth of the town and optimizing current systems were at the heart of my daily work. Working within the restrictions of Kalu Yala given its mission and geographic location brought unique design challenges that required creative solutions. Preventative maintenance and system optimization turned out to be key aspects for keeping the town running. Rethinking how we make an impact simply by living as well as challenging the norms of modern living allowed freedom to implements and experiment with new systems.
