Abstract:This thesis examines the departmental early involvement and integration possibilities in the context of a construction company, targeting to increase the total spend of international purchases within the case organisation. It uses participatory action research (PAR), structured interviews and internet survey as research methods to address the set of research questions. The findings are divided into two categories: (1) implications for the case organisation and (2) theoretical implications on departmental early involvement within a construction project. According to the results, the case organisation needs to develop the interface between the departments by focusing on the tasks of the relevant parties according to the presented type-specific contract model. The model highlights the division of tasks and improvement of the communication and visibility of international purchasing department in internal context. The theoretical implications show that the contract type between the main contractor (MC) and its client has a significant impact on the early involvement period of the international purchasing department. To address the need for early involvement activities, a framework of early involvement antecedents was created. The study also fills the gaps found in the literature on early departmental involvement and early involvement of main contractor’s supply chain.
