Abstract:The aim of this thesis was to investigate what civil society organizations mean for the task of the social domain to promote the well-being of citizens. It was investigated which activities civil society organizations undertake to promote the well-being of society, what the cooperation between the municipality and civil society organizations looks like, and what the influence of the characteristics of civil society organizations is on the extent to which they (can) contribute to the promotion of the well-being of all residents in an inclusive society. Explicit attention was paid to religious civil society organizations in relation to secular organizations because of their interesting position in Dutch society. The most important results can be summarized in the following key insights: in its policy the municipality does not take (or hardly takes) into account, the characteristics of the organizations; activities undertaken by churches and sports associations both seem to be very focused on their own supporters; the social role of religious organizations is hampered by the church and state relationship, work pressure and the image of the organizations towards non-believing residents; cooperation between the municipality and voluntary organizations is in some cases impeded by mutual misunderstanding, miscommunication and the image of the municipality; and last but not least: the cooperation between sports associations and the municipality in the social domain is still in its infancy and is characterized by discrepancies in policy and vision. The recommendations can be summarized in three pillars: (1) municipalities should actively focus on open and clear communication with civil society organizations; (2) municipalities should actively support, and pave the way for organizations; (3) Municipalities must take into account the characteristics, limiting factors and the target group of the organization. By keeping this in mind, the municipality can ensure a complementary safety net where all target groups are reached in an inclusive society.
