Abstract: | Introduction: University students are particularly exposed to the experience of stress which raises concern for their wellbeing. Stress poses a risk to mental health and can also encourage alcohol consumption. Method: 1474 students from all study programs at the University of Twente (UT) completed a self-administered questionnaire assessing their mental health (depression, anxiety, wellbeing), stress levels, and alcohol use. Depression was measured using the PHQ-9, anxiety using the GAD-7, wellbeing using the MHC-SF, stress using the PSS-14, and alcohol use using the AUDIT-C. Using correlation and regression analyses, it was assessed how all variables are related and how stress predicts mental health and alcohol use. Results: Students experienced moderate levels of stress. >75% of the sample experienced depressive symptoms; >38% a major depression; >64% minimal/mild anxiety levels, and >35% moderate/severe levels. Moderately strong levels of wellbeing were found. >72% showed potential for hazardous drinking or alcohol use disorder. Stress predicted negative mental health, but not wellbeing. Alcohol use was not related to stress or mental health. Conclusion: Stress, depression, and anxiety are persisting problems in the student population. Promisingly, students also seem to experience moderately high levels of wellbeing which may be utilized to combat stress and negative mental health. |
