Abstract:Laughing gas is an upcoming drug in the Netherlands. In contrast with other drugs, not much is known about its behavioral aspects. This study is the first to predict the intention to use laughing gas by means of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The TPB factors: attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control (PBC) together predicted intentions to use all kinds of drugs in numerous studies. However, this study regarding laughing gas, found that only the attitude towards laughing gas use predicted the intention to use the drug. A more positive attitude increased the intention to use laughing gas. Furthermore, it was concluded that previous use of laughing gas indirectly influences the intention to use the drug, by influencing the attitude. The results of this study were used to formulate an advice for the drug prevention organization Tactus on how to approach laughing gas. The advice was granted to focus prevention efforts on negatively altering the attitude towards laughing gas in an informative manner, specifically targeted at previous users of the drug.
