Abstract:The current statistics on food waste are not in concordance with the sustainability goals. The biggest waste producers are households and at this rate, either the production of food is to be increased, as well as the price for food, or food waste must be reduced, and awareness must be promoted. This paper is a take on creating awareness on food waste in households and educating the consumers through a gamified application. The aim of this research is to enhance the user engagement within an application that touches upon a complex topic, to ensure a good learning environment for the user. The application is developed, designed and evaluated with the goal of answering the research question of this paper: How can user experience design influence the user engagement within an application that promotes food waste reduction?The first chapter introduces the reader into the existing problem and the assignment. The second chapter gathers background information related to the topic of the paper. The third chapter explains the method this paper follows. The fourth chapter describes multiple ideas that have been discussed while brainstorming solutions to the problem. The fifth chapter lays out all the requirements and specifications the product must meet. The sixth chapter presents in detail the concept that was chosen and the realization of it. The last chapters present the evaluation and discussion over all paper.
