Abstract: | Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a progressive neuromuscular disorder which affects 1 in 10.000 individuals. It can ultimately lead to tetraplegia and dysarthria. Regardless of these physical limitations, the SMA type II population tends to be optimistic, proactive, and self-directing in life. This single-case study aims at the development of a novel participatory design methodology, which facilitates the inclusion of a co-designer with SMA type II, strictly through online communication. The methodology will be used to collectively design a solution which offers empowerment in life. The study demonstrated that empathic design, narrative research, reframing, and scenario-based design seem to be effective methodologies to successfully conduct a co-design study with a member from the SMA type II population. Empathy in particular, needs to play a more active role in future design studies in order to address users' latent needs adequately. |
