Abstract:In the equestrian sport, rider and horse compete together in various disciplines. While the urge to win is always present, the welfare of the equine athletes needs to be ensured. To understand the measures present at equestrian competitions to secure horse welfare looked into various rulebooks of national and international equestrian federations. The equestrian federations and their provision regarding horse welfare. Using the institutional analysis and development framework and the theory of horse welfare, we studied the rulebooks of national and international equestrian federations in the light of the welfare of the horse. We found provisions, regarding horse welfare, that help to maintain the welfare of the horse at competitive events.
