Abstract:This research focusses on Bottling Line 2 at the Grolsch brewery. The aim was to identify possible improvements to the performance of this line, specifically to the changeovers that are performed. The current situation was analyzed using the available data about changeover performance in the first months of 2019. The outcomes of this analysis, together with literature, observations and interviews, were used to identify bottleneck processes. The Single Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) methodology was applied to improve changeover performance by examining possibilities to convert internal activities to external activities. Next to SMED, there were also other improvements in the changeover process examined. It was found that a different strategy regarding the use of new bottles could lead to a significant improvement in the changeover performance. The results of this research were combined in a set of recommendations to Grolsch which would lead to an increased changeover performance of more than 20%.
