Abstract:Due to new contract types in the road construction industry, a shift in responsibilities takes place, including extensions of guarantee periods. Besides the quality of the final product, the contractor is often also responsible for the maintenance. To stay competitive and reduce maintenance costs, it is in the contractors best interest to optimize the asphalt paving process. By optimizing this process, the variability will be reduced which will contribute to an increase in quality. By applying new technology, it is possible to better control the important process parameters such as temperature and compaction homogeneity. A higher temperature homogeneity and less variation in compaction can be achieved by applying new technology. Currently, it is difficult to easily achieve technology adoption within asphalt paving teams since their work methods are based on craftsmanship and common practice and with little use of new technologies such as GPS and infrared thermography. This research will contribute to the adoption of the new technology discussion. The goal of this research is to develop an implementation method based on re ective learning that will contribute to the usage of new technology within the asphalt team. To accomplish this goal, the following research questions have been formulated: 1. Which implementation method is suitable to apply within an asphalt team and how can the application of this method be tested? 2. How is the implementation method applied within the asphalt team? 3. What lessons can be drawn from an analysis of the implementation of a process management tool? To answer the research questions a literature study, surveys and observations are conducted. The implementation method is applied within one asphalt team to examine the in uence of the method on the usage of technology. From the results, it became clear that the data from WITOS did not match the work methods of the asphalt team. The asphalt paving team considers a project as being successfully completed when the target compaction is achieved (as given by the core density results). While the WITOS system provides data and graphics pertaining the asphalt truck logistics and temperature homogeneity it does not contain any density measurement data. Therefore, it was dif ficult to re ect on their work to define new strategies that could enhance asphalt quality. Based on these results, it is recommended that the application of the implementation method will continue and gap between the provided data and work methods is closed. With the closing of the gap, the implementation method is likely to succeed and WITOS will be used more often. This enables an effcient process. Another recommendation is addressed to Wirtgen, the creator of WITOS paving. The user interface of WITOS is in need of a change to increase the usability of the software. The current software interface suppresses the rate of adoption of this new technology.
