Abstract: | Reading fiction can influence our sense of self. Furthermore, reading experiences are extremely idiosyncratic. In the Psychology of fiction, a substantiated theory about how to measure self-transformation while reading, and explain idiosyncratic experiences was lacking. The Storyworld Possible Selves model offers a more operationalized approach to investigate self-transformation and unique experiences. The current study tests the model empirically and evaluates students' reader responses to a graphic Novel by means of an open-ended questionnaire. The results indicate that it is possible to give suggestions about self-transformative effects and related feelings. Moreover, individual differences may be explained and the model may reveal something about the nature of a reader, and socio-cultural information. If the suggestions are valid, the model could be used in narrative therapy because it is possible to identify significant self-conceptions and work with them. The model needs further investigation to see if the suggestions are valid. |
