Abstract:Due to an increasing awareness of the environment, the attention towards agricultural conservation of nature is increasing. Agricultural conservation of nature consists of measures farmers and landowners take on their farmyard and farmland to maintain and improve biodiversity. This research aims to gain insight in the factors motivating or demotivating farmers in the province of Overijssel to participate in agricultural conservation of nature. The motivations and demotivations are categorized into: willingness to participate, ability to participate, social influences and policy influences. Data is collected via interviews and a survey among farmers and land owners. Results show that financial reasons seem to be both a reason to participate as a reason to refrain from participation. The fit between agricultural conservation of nature and the farm-management is related to these financial reasons. This fit is both a reason to participate as a reason not to participate, when a lack of fit existed. On the subject of social influences a majority of both participants and non-participants indicated to perceive no pressure from society or farmers to participate. Nevertheless, results of the survey indicated that a majority of participants participate to show sustainability to civilians in the sense of participating in agricultural conservation of nature.
