Abstract:Due to the ongoing technological developments, a process of automation has started within the grocery retail-sector. As the automation will take over certain tasks of low-skilled workers, the content of their profession is changing. Therefore, this process has a drastic impact on the employees involved. However, companies should still value their human capital, as it is seen as a critical factor in gaining sustainable competitive advantage and efficiency in a world where knowledge and customer communication is gaining importance (Hendricks, 2002). For this reason, the transition that is caused by technical automation, needs to be carried out in such a way that makes sure employees are taken into account. This research investigates how low-skilled workers within the grocery retail-sector experience the influence that technology has on their job, whether they see it as an enrichment or rather as a threat, in which it answers the question: “How do employees (low-skilled) in the grocery retail sector experience the ‘latest’ technological developments?”. The technological development that this research focuses on is the introduction of the self-register.
