Abstract:This study investigates the impact of CEO-TMT interface on firm's R&D investment (proxy for firm's innovation). More specifically - the interfacing effect between four TMT characteristics - Education, Age, Tenure and Functional diversity and CEO career horizon. Based on a sample of 75 German high-tech firms from 2011 to 2019. The results found that highly educated and longer tenured TMT play an important role in alleviating the tendencies of CEO with shorter career horizon to curtail R&D investments. Whereas results of TMT age and functional diversity yield inconclusive results that do not substantiate the priori predictions. Additional test conducted also found that the interfacing effect vary based on different industry sub-samples. Given the TMT definition employed, further empirical research is needed to assess the validity of these results.
