Abstract: | Many primary school teachers feel unconfident while teaching music to children, because they feel they lack the skills, insights in musical aspects and self-efficacy needed to provide quality music education. Therefore, the aim of this research is to design a visual feedback system that supports pre-service teachers at the Pabo to confidently instruct a music class while guiding a singing exercise. Within this project, literature research was conducted in which different types of feedback and other feedback systems in music education are analysed. Based on these findings, a visual feedback system is designed that provides both real-time and immediate feedback on the musical performance of the students in the music class. This feedback is visualised by means of metronome elements that indicate the pitch, timing and volume of each individual student. Evaluation in the form of an online concept interview and an online user test concludes that the real-time feedback provided by the system increases the insight in the musical performance of individual students. As a result, the system enables the pre-service teacher to provide more direct and meaningful feedback to the students. However, it was hard to keep overview over the music class as a group within the system. |
