Abstract:The transition from a linear to a circular economy is key to realize a more sustainable tomorrow. However, there are still many barriers faced during a CE transition and until now no focus has been on which dynamic capabilities are needed to solve these CE-barriers. To address this, this study uses a multiple-case studies approach, where the barriers and dynamic capabilities during the different stages of the CE transition are explored. The findings indicate that especially business model innovation, circular design and collaboration in the value network are important dynamic capabilities. The results show that especially CE-specific barriers and dynamic capabilities have an influence on the success of the CE transition. Moreover, the results implicate that the stage of the transition matters in experiencing the different barriers and dynamic capabilities, something which has not been emphasized throughout the literature until now. This is important, because the stage of transition matters to understand the context when researching barriers and dynamic capabilities. In addition, this paper contributes to the theory that it is insightful to distinguish between CE-specific and general innovation barriers, as these were perceived and possessed differently by the case firms.
