Abstract: | Museon, the museum of culture and science in The Haque, wants to expand with a science lab where visitors can perform experiments: the Discoverlab. This space will fit in well with the interactive character of the Museon. However, the Museon experiences that the staffing of such spaces is very limited due to financial possibilities and as a result can hardly be made available to regular visitors. For this reason, they would like to investigate the possibilities of designing a science lab in such a way that it requires minimal staffing. This project focuses on answering the design question: What could a visitor experience for a science lab at the Museon look like where visitors can perform experiments from the natural sciences in a playful and educational way with minimal staffing of the space required? On the basis of an external, an internal and a literature analysis, it was investigated what the current range of lab spaces in museums in the Netherlands is and how the Discoverlab best fits within the Museon. This has led to an extensive program of requirements and wishes, which helps to answer the design question. In response to the design question, a visitor experience was designed in the form of an activity route and scenario. The visitor experience describes how the visitor as a researcher in the Discoverlab explores various natural phenomena, in which the physical space must stimulate the visitor’s wonder and invite them to ask questions and to explore . The activities in the design of the Discoverlab are based on research and design learning and are designed to respond to the visitor’s wonder and ultimately stimulate the development of scientific literacy. |
