Abstract: | The purpose of the present paper is to explore a modern social behaviour that gained increasing popularity in the past years, that of meeting a possible romantic partner through an online dating app. Even though the research on human mating is not new, the sub-domain of online dating is relatively uncharted. The present study builds on previous researches and recontextualises older insights in the present social dynamics. Thus by developing a more comprehensive model of human behaviour specific to this communication medium, the current scientific knowledge is further enriched. The most important elements of innovation that distinguish the present research from previous others are the distinction between the two types of romantic motivation (hook-up and long term relationship) that may moderate the relationship between different variables as well as considering the role of perceived accessibility in the influence of the desire to date. Hence the paper explores the influence of the profile's perceived trustworthiness, the profile's perceived accessibility, the profile's perceived physical attractiveness and the profile's perceived similarity on the viewer's desire to date as moderated by the type of romantic motivation and gender. |
