Abstract: | This study aims to find out to what extent entrepreneurial passion is influenced by being active in the uncertain hospitality industry, and to what extent gender does play a moderating role. To examine this, semi-structured interviews with eight female and eight male hospitality founders are conducted. Findings show that entrepreneurial passion among both genders is negatively influenced by negative emotions arising from the uncertain hospitality industry, due to COVID-19. It appears that the effect from the negative emotions arising from the uncertain industry has a more negative effect on the passion of entrepreneurs who generally possess high levels of entrepreneurial passion. In this study, the male entrepreneurs generally tend to exhibit higher levels of entrepreneurial passion, as they nurture their passion for entrepreneurship longer, more often, and to a higher degree from the past. That leads to a larger decrease in entrepreneurial passion compared to the female entrepreneurs because the female entrepreneurs generally experience less of the passion and dream of starting a restaurant. That causes the variable of an uncertain industry to have a significant negative changing effect on the degree of presence of entrepreneurial passion. Gender thus moderates the relationship between uncertain industries and entrepreneurial passion. |
