Abstract:Recently, the NDT-EP method is developed to observe mechanisms involved in the nociceptive system. To further validate this method, knowledge about the influence of subject characteristics on nociceptive detection thresholds and evoked potentials contributes. In this research the influence of body mass index on the NDT-EP method is explored. Pain-free morbid obese subjects and morbid obese subjects with chronic arthrogenic pain complaints were included (body mass index ≥ 40 kg/m2). Data from healthy, pain-free subjects (body mass index 18.5 – 24.9 kg/m2) was collected from an existing data-base. Detection probabilities and simultaneous recorded evoked potentials were obtained during intra-epidermal electrical stimulations on both hand dorsa. General feasibility of the NDT-EP method in morbid obese subjects with and without chronic pain is suggested. Body mass index seems to affect detection probabilities after single pulse stimuli in pain-free subjects. The interaction between morbid obesity and chronic pain suggests more impact on detection thresholds, but not on evoked potentials. To further study the influence of body mass index on the NDT-EP method, exploring the method in different body mass indexes and in healthy subjects with chronic arthrogenic pain is recommended. Continued investigations are advised to further examine measurement procedures.
