Abstract: | In a time of growing public environmental awareness, this thesis offers research on the role local governments can take furthering the environmental sustainability in waste management, by using a qualitative case study approach on the case of Münster, Germany. The research is building on the concepts of the circular economy, the role of local governments in an international framework and the difference between current and best practices, from an environmental sustainability perspective. The research finds that there are current waste management practices that do not seem compatible with the principles formulated in the legal framework. But although the research shows that the city of Münster has made use of many different measures, that are discussed as being possible ways for local governments to influence the environmental sustainability of waste management, the limited data fails to establish that conclusion, while creating further possibilities for future research. |
