Abstract:Research aim: In this study a sensor-based method using accelerometer and gyroscope data was developed to determine different metrics during a reach to target movement. In addition, the test-retest reliability of these metrics was analysed. Method: Five healthy adult subjects performed a total of 60 reach to target movements (RTT movements) from a centrally located point on a table to four surrounding targets (15 RTT movements per target). Based on the developed sensor method the travelled path length, average velocity, peak velocity, movement duration, and fluency (Number of Movement Units (NMU)) of the RTT movements were determined. The subjects performed the session three times in total where the sensor was removed from the hand between sessions. Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was above 0.90 for all metrics, except for the NMU (ICC = 0.89). The Standard Error of Measurement (SEM) for all metrics was less than 10% of the average metric value. The same applied to the mean value of the Bland-Altman analysis. Conclusion: All metrics show excellent relative test-retest reliability. Differences less than 10% of the mean metric value are discernible for all metrics. The outcomes of this study are a step forward towards a rehabilitation program for stroke patients in their home environment, monitored by their therapists through IMUs.
