Abstract:Young people between the age of 16 to 24 years old live in a digital age where they can share own and creative content with others online on social media. The most popular and upcoming social media platform among young people is Instagram. Instagram is a visual focused social media platform where young people have an online presence, and thereby create a social identity online. Young people namely use Instagram to connect and interact with others that are like them to feel part of a social group online, which would create a social identity online. The aim of the present study is therefore to investigate what influence 1) social connectedness on Instagram, 2) number of followers on Instagram, 3) number of likes on Instagram, and 4) activity on Instagram have on the online social identity of young people, with gender as moderator.
